I was recently invited to participate in an exciting new project: Toby Neighbor's blog illostribute. The idea behind this blog is as simple as it is genius:
An illustrator or artist from the past is selected. Contemporary, working illustrators are invited to choose an image of said master and create their own interpretation or copy.
I was happy to hear that the first illustrator that was chosen was J.C. Leyendecker. I am a great Leyendecker fan, he was a master at both elegance and humor. I could look at his painting for hours and study his amazing technique: the way he combines a classic painterly approach and very graphic solid color shapes give his works both the appeal of a well rendered painting and the definite impact of a graphic poster.
For more information and of course all the lovely tributes got to the illustribute post!
I took the arrow collar adds as a starting point for my tribute. Here are some sketches:
JC is one of my favorite artists of all time- delighted to see your tribute!
