Venice

This year I participated in Yuko Shimizu's illustration course in Venice. It was an unforgettable and inspiring experience, I get a warm fuzzy feeling when I think back to this beautiful impossible city and all those crazy talented woman I had the pleasure of getting to know a little - oh and the food! expensive but delicious!
We had an assingment for the course which was to draw an illustration of a superhero saving Venice. We took a gondola ride once so I could really see a gondoliere in action and suffice to say was very impressed. So he is my hero who saves the city.

Burlesque Berlin: Lady Lou

This is the first image of my new series, which will be a series of portraits of Berlin Burlesque artists. Burlesque in Berlin is constantly getting better and better and it has made going out more fun for me than I could have imagined - and I love going out. Basically, every night were there is Burlesque involved is special and fun and never ever boring.

So for the first portrait I chose Lady Lou. As you can see in the video she is absolutely gorgeous and a fantastic dancer. I love the design of the costume and how it really becomes part of the dance.

I did these a year ago for the cocktail menu of a restaurant at Berlin Potsdamer Platz. It was a crazy deadline, but I thought the idea was fun.

Winnetou

At this years Munich Comic Festival the award for lifetime achievement was given to Helmut Nickel. To honor him further many German artists created tributes to his Winnetou comic.
For my version I picked the scene were the became blood brothers. I chose this symmetrical church window look because I wanted to portray the two heroes almost saint like, because the characters are very traditional hero characters who always do the right thing, are the best at whatever they do and have no flaws whatsoever - Basically it is the adventures of a Mighty Whitey who is best friends with a Noble Savage. I had a lot of fun with the details in this piece like the different idealistic male body types, or giving them the weapons that Karl May, the authour of the original novels, had custom made to look like the ones he described in the book.

Fish and Whips Poster

I recently had the pleasure to create the new poster for the Berlin Cabaret Show Fish and Whips at the Comedy Club Kookaburra. I love the shows mixture of cabaret, burlesque and music (I especially love the opera songs!) so I was really happy when Jack Woodhead, who hosts the show, asked me if I would like to create a poster.

If you're in Berlin you should really check it out, it is such a treat! You can follow the show on facebook, too!

Illostribute: Al Hirschfeld - Some like it hot

The latest illostribute post is up! Al Hirschfeld is one of my absolute favorites, I have spent many sunday mornings lying in bed drinking coffee and marveling at his beautiful drawings in the amazing book Hirschfeld on line.

I started with copying the original art, as you can see from all the bookmarks I had a hard time choosing!

When sketching I noticed how well the shapes fit together, which gave me the idea for my compositon:

Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2011 rtw

My interpretation of the las Dolce & Gabbana collection. Vogue.co.uk has some great high resoluted images so you can feast your eyes on the impossible beauty of the lace, which I wanted to portray here.

Some process pics I already posted on twitter:

Jelänger Jelieber

These are two postcards I did for the restaurant "Jelänger Jelieber" that is just around the corner from where I live.
It is one of my favorite places in Berlin, because they have this rather unique combination of great cuisine and wine and a very comfortable and friendly atmosphere, so I was very happy when they asked me to draw a motif for their postcard.
They have a restaurant in front and a playground cafe in the back, so we decided to make two different postcards because both places are rather different.
Here is my sketch:

and for those who are interested the path view, of the final images:
